Allochthonous Particulate Organic Carbon in Blue Carbon Ecosystems

Database description This dataset contains estimates of allochthonous particulate organic carbon (POC) contribution to sedimentary carbon stocks (n= 434) of seagrass meadows (n=227), saltmarshes (n=79), mangroves (n=120) and tidal fresh-water wetlands (n=8) extracted from the scientific literature (n studies= 102). The first sheet contains an explanation of the meaning of each column and the second sheet contains the dataset. Methodology This dataset was compiled by conducting a search through SCOPUS and Web of Science on the 5th of January 2026. Search terms were “BCE*” AND “carbon” AND “source” OR “origin” OR “isotope” OR “*chthonous” AND “soil” OR “sediment” AND NOT “food.” where BCE was individually input as either mangrove, seagrass, tidal marsh, salt marsh or saltmarsh and tidal freshwater or freshwater tidal. The searches were targeted at the title and the abstract. The search resulted in a total of 3,421 citations across the four BCEs. A 1,257 duplicate citations were removed. The title and abstract of the remaining 2164 papers were skimmed to discard irrelevant articles (i.e., no data on allochthonous POC contribution provided, and/ or no data on targeted ecosystems provided), leading to a total of 601 articles to be reviewed in full text . The full text review led to the identification of 92 articles worldwide (Fig. 2) that either reported estimates on mean (±standard deviation) allochthonous POC contribution (%) or autochthonous POC contribution (%) to soil POC stocks for at least one of the BCEs (357 estimates in total). For studies that only reported the contribution of autochthonous POC, the percentage of allochthonous POC was estimated by subtracting it from 100%. From an additional set of 10 articles, the allochthonous POC contribution to soil stocks was estimated from reported data on n, minimum, maximum, median, first and third quartiles (q1, q3) of allochthonous or autochthonous POC contributions applying the following equations: mean=(min(n + 3)+ 2(n - 1)(q1 + median + q3)+(n+3) )/8n by Bland (2015); mean=(q1 + median + q3)/3 by Wan et al. (2014); or mean = median if ≥25 mean=((min+ 2median +max ))/4 if n<25 by Hozo et al. (2005). This led to an additional 77 estimates of allochthonous POC contribution to BCE soil stocks. The extracted data were either reported in tables, in the main text, or in figures, in which case they were extracted using the software Plot Digitiser. In addition to the estimates on allochthonous POC, we compiled data on the location where the data came from, the sources of POC identified, and the approach for source tracking and classified the data according to the POC deposits in the first metre of soil (0–100 cm) and deep POC deposits (>100 cm depth).
