Integration 5G-NR Satellite Connectivity in 6G NTN

Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) have significantly transformed mobile communications over the past three decades and are becoming increasingly integral to 5G and emerging 6G architectures, extending connectivity beyond terrestrial limitations. Traditionally, satellite communications relied on proprietary systems based on geostationary spacecraft designed for specific applications. However, recent advances in spacecraft manufacturing and launch technologies have reduced costs and enabled the deployment of large satellite constellations, particularly in low Earth orbit (LEO), making large-scale space-based communication services commercially viable. Simultaneously, growing interest in integrated satellite–terrestrial infrastructures within 5G has accelerated NTN development across research and industry, focusing on enhanced performance, deeper integration, and new capabilities for future standards. NTNs are now viewed not only as key enablers of 5G evolution but also as foundational elements of 6G, supporting seamless global connectivity. The 6G ecosystem involves collaboration among industry, academia, standards organizations, and network operators, covering research, standardization, deployment, and commercialization processes. In this chapter, the concept of terrestrial and NTN convergence is derived based on 3GPP 5G NTN evolution and the ITU IMT-2030 6G vision. Technical performance requirements, use cases, and the development roadmap are presented. Opportunities and key challenges of integrated broadband LEO networks in fixed/mobile services are also discussed.
