Textile Functionalization by Skincare Finishing

The concern for a healthy lifestyle has become a priority for many consumers who no longer choose a textile product solely for its aesthetic and protective functions but also for a range of beneficial effects on the human body. Therefore, functional textiles that can be tailored to individual needs through a variety of obtained effects are becoming increasingly popular. In the production of functional textiles, the skincare finishes are pretty used to provide new functionalities (present a range of beneficial effects on the human body such as antimicrobial, aromatic, UV protection, insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiaging), adding value to the final product, thus leading to increased consumer interest and market competitiveness. This chapter reviews the current uses of textiles in skincare, types of textiles used for skincare finishes, methods for embedding active compounds into protective carriers, the materials involved in their production (including substances used as carriers and those used as bioactive compounds), methods for applying active systems onto textile substrates, release mechanisms of active compounds, analysis methods for skincare textiles, and some commercial types of textiles functionalized by skincare finishes.
