Abstract Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process that rapidly converts magnetic energy into plasma kinetic and thermal energy, and generates high-speed outflows. Within the reconnection outflow region, electromagnetic fields, plasma density, and flow velocity exhibit strong fluctuations that may interact nonlinearly with magnetic reconnection. Although significant progress has been made in characterizing these perturbations, the intrinsic nature of magnetic field fluctuations in outflow regions remains poorly understood. Here, we apply the complexity–entropy (C–H) method to investigate magnetic field fluctuations in the terrestrial magnetotail reconnection outflow region. By analyzing the permutation entropy and Jensen–Shannon complexity in the C–H plane, we find that the magnetic field fluctuations exhibit signatures of chaotic behavior. We further explore how the complexity of magnetic fluctuations relates to secondary reconnection events and ion velocity. Our results show that a stronger guide field in secondary reconnection and lower ion velocity are associated with increased Jensen–Shannon complexity and decreased permutation entropy in the outflow regions.
