Land North-East of Chudleigh, Devon - Archive Report on an Archaeological Excavation

Excavation of 4 small areas targeting features identified in earlier evaluation by AC Archaeology: Area 1 measures 150 m2 targeting the undated ditch F603 from the evaluation whose environmental sample produced a quantity of charcoal. Area 2 measures 100 m2 targeting a pit F803 which produced medieval pottery. Area 3 measures 44 m2 targeting an undated pit F1003 which produced charcoal and heat affected clay. Area 6 measures 62 m2 targeting heat affected ditch F2903 which produced charred plant remains. Areas 4 and 5 not part of this phase No further features or dating evidence to those found in the evaluation were found in the excavation. The ditches of unknown date and function in Areas 1 and 6 were further investigated. The shallow pit in Area 3 was further investigated and was of uncertain date and function. The very shallow pit (0.05 m) of possible medieval date found in Area 2 during the evaluation was not found in the excavation. It may just have been a depression in the natural soil, the 2 sherds of medieval pottery recovered in the evaluation being residual
