The evaluation involved the mechanical excavation under archaeological supervision of what were initially planned as four 2m x 2m trial pits (but modified following discussion with Aidan Smyth to three test pits of varying size) to assess the underlying deposits and level of impact from the construction work undertaken on site. Where necessary, surfaces were hand cleaned for examination and recording and deposits observed were recorded on standard pro-forma recording sheets. A digital colour photographic record was also maintained, some of which is reproduced in the report as plates 1-5 Appendix 1. All work was carried out by James Roberts and Michael Blake according to the agreed Written Scheme of Investigation and in accordance with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) standards and guidance for archaeological evaluations. The trial pits identified natural geology at an average depth of 1.50m BGL. The only features present were brick walls associated with the early 19th century predecessor to the extant foundry building. There were no earlier finds or features present within the site. The investigation has confirmed that the pad foundations exceed 1.80m in depth and penetrate into the natural clay resulting in localised truncation. However, the associated groundworks beyond the pad foundations were limited in depth and have preserved the structural remains of the earlier brick structures in situ.
