Athletic performance is influenced not only by physical fitness but also by psychological factors, particularly anxiety. This study investigated the effects of state and trait anxiety on athletic performance before and after competition among intercollegiate female Kho-Kho players. A within-subject research design with stratified convenience sampling was employed. Thirty female athletes aged 18–25 years from the University of Jammu participated in the study. State and trait anxiety were assessed before and after competition using the State-Trait Anxiety Test (S.T.A.T.) developed by Dr. Sanjay Vohra (2011). Data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient through SPSS. The findings revealed no statistically significant difference in anxiety levels between the pre-competition (Mean = 5.10, SD = 2.00) and post-competition (Mean = 5.56, SD = 1.61) phases (t(29) = -1.394, p = .174). However, a significant positive correlation (r = .504) was observed between pre- and post-competition anxiety, indicating that athletes with higher anxiety before competition tended to maintain similar anxiety levels afterward. The study concludes that while competition itself did not significantly alter anxiety levels, trait anxiety remained relatively stable and consistently influenced athletes' psychological responses. The findings emphasize the importance of incorporating long-term psychological skills training and anxiety management strategies into athletic preparation to optimize performance under competitive conditions.
