Report on a Programme of Archaeological Supervision and Recording, Little Priory, Main Road, Stixwould, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, LN10 5HP

The archaeological supervision and recording comprised the monitoring of a trench excavated between the house and the pole, followed by the auguring for two new poles and finally the removal of the redundant poles. A plan of the monitored area is shown on figure 2 of the report. All work was carried out according to the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) standards and in line with the agreed Written Scheme of Investigation. A digital colour photographic record was maintained, some of which is reproduced in the report as plates 1-8, Appendix 1. The fieldwork was undertaken by James Roberts. The cable trench measured 0.45m deep by 0.45m wide and was opened by a 360� mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket under continuous archaeological supervision. The uppermost deposit comprised of (101), a friable dark brown clayey sand topsoil up to 0.34m thick. This directly overlay the natural geology (102) which comprised of a soft, mid grey clayey sand which exceeded 0.11m. The auger holes for the new posts measured 0.65m in diameter by up to 2.30m deep. The water table was encountered at approximately 1.26m depth and well into the natural geology. The auger holes revealed that the natural changed to a mottled mid yellow clayey sand from approximately 0.70m in depth, extending to the limit of excavation. The archaeological mitigation did not reveal any archaeological features or finds within the monitored area. The project objectives were met in full with a high confidence rating for the results.
