The evaluation s involved the mechanical excavation under archaeological supervision of what were initially planned as twenty one 50m x 1.8m trial trenches. Full access to the south-eastern area of the site was limited as it lay within the Lioncourt Homes site compound. Following discussion with Aidan Smyth trench 16 was shortened and trenches 17 to 21 were not excavated . Instead, the square meterage was utilised to open up a small area strip (Area 1) between trenches 3 and 4 to clarify the nature of the features that had been identified on the geophysical survey as a possible pit alignment. Where necessary, surfaces were hand cleaned for examination and recording and deposits observed were recorded on standard pro-forma recording sheets. Full trench descriptions are provided in the trench and context summary which is presented in Appendix 1 of the report. The excavation (Area 1) continued the numbering from trench 3 which is also included in the appendix. A digital colour photographic record was maintained, some of which is reproduced in the report as plates 1 - 18, Appendix 2. All work was carried out by James Roberts, Michael Blake and Jeremy Smith according to the agreed Written Scheme of Investigation (Roberts 2026) and in accordance with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) standards and guidance for archaeological evaluations. The majority of trenches were negative, although plough scars were identified cutting the natural geology in many of them. A ditch [303] with a re-cut [305] was identified in the north-west corner of the site which crossed trenches 2, 3 and 4. This ditch is visible on aerial photographs dated 1945 as an extant field boundary. It was subsequently infilled and is still visible as a crop mark on later satellite images. The geophysical anomalies identified as a possible pit alignment in the north-western corner of the site cross and truncate the ditch [303, 305] and therefore post-date 1945. No other archaeological features were identified within the trenches, and the results of the investigation are presented with a high confidence rating.
