Archaeological Evaluation Report, Proposed Community Centre, Land North of Priory Pools Park, South-west of Sussex Court, Warwick

The evaluation involved the mechanical excavation under archaeological supervision of two 20 x 1.60m trial trenches. All trenches were laid out by DGPS survey as specified in the WSI. Where necessary, surfaces were hand cleaned for examination and recording and deposits observed were recorded on standard pro-forma recording sheets. Full context descriptions are provided in the trench summary which is presented in Appendix 1 of the report. A digital colour photographic record was maintained, some of which is reproduced in the report as plates 1 - 7 Appendix 2. All work was carried out according to the agreed Written Scheme of Investigation and in accordance with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) standards and guidance for archaeological evaluations. The fieldwork was undertaken by James Roberts, Michael Blake and Neil Pointon. The evaluation trenches targeted the proposed development to the south of the existing garages and hardstanding. The area appears to have been truncated down to natural geology and used as a dumping ground in modern times as evidenced by the amount of rubbish within the topsoil and in the four identified pits. The large cut feature [204] identified in the south-east end of trench 2 was excavated to a depth of approximately 2.0m and shown to contain only a single fill with many tip lines and lenses of poorly sorted material. Modern rubbish was present throughout the fill, including at the base of the cut, suggesting a single episode of deposition. However, the location of this cut accords with the mapped extent of the former mill ponds on the 1903 Ordnance mapping (which in turn may represent the location of the Medieval monastic fish ponds). On balance it is likely that this cut feature [204] is the edge of the former ponds. Given that modern rubbish was present at the base of the cut, the pond must have been thoroughly dredged prior to being infilled in the 20th century. That being said, although there was no evidence of earlier deposits surviving within the evaluation trench, it is possible that such deposits might be present elsewhere within the wider feature.
