Taitai’er Caves are an important part of the Kuča Caves, but the material and cultural life of the monks in the Hinayana Buddhist grottoes during the Sui and Tang dynasties is less explored at present. This paper examines the monks’ use of grains, fruits, and vegetables based on the remains of twelve types of crops, and of field weeds, as unearthed from the Taitai’er Caves in Baicheng County, Xinjiang, China, in conjunction with Hinayana Buddhist scriptures and other excavated documents. Analysis reveals that they adopted a multi-crop farming strategy. The monks primarily consumed affordable barley, millet, and corn as staple foods. Additionally, apricots ( Prunus armeniaca ), peaches ( Prunus persica ), grapes ( Vitis vinifera ), walnuts ( Juglans regia ), gourds and other fruits and vegetables served as important dietary supplements in their daily lives.
