Bird-Habitat Indicator Assemblages for 187 natural habitats spanning Africa, Australia, and North America

The relationships between bird species and their habitat preferences provide a vital key to understanding both birds and ecosystems. We used expert elicitation to develop Bird-Habitat Indicator Assemblages, which list each bird species’ level of association (Obligate, Strong Indicator, Weak Indicator, Nominally Present, or Not Associated) with each of 187 natural habitats from Africa, Australia and North America. Our dataset includes 4329 of the 11,145 bird species worldwide, and 187 of the 517 natural habitats of the world. These Bird-Habitat Indicator Assemblages can be used for habitat prediction, to provide more accurate information about likely locations for target species, for better-informed species distribution models, and to identify critical habitat for conservation of threatened bird species.
