Graphdiyne: An Efficient Two-Dimensional Carbon Platform for Advanced Photodetection

Abstract Graphdiyne is an emerging two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope featuring a unique sp-sp2 hybridized structure. This architecture confers a tunable direct bandgap, high carrier mobility, and excellent stability, rendering it a highly promising candidate for next-generation optoelectronics. However, a comprehensive and systematic review summarizing its recent rapid progress specifically in photodetection is still lacking. Herein, we summarize the recent advances in graphdiyne based photodetectors. First, the fundamental structure and the consequent outstanding optoelectronic properties of graphdiyne are introduced. Subsequently, the progress is systematically reviewed according to four primary device configurations: metal–semiconductor-metal, junction-type, phototransistors, and photoelectrochemical photodetectors. The operational mechanisms, structural designs, and state-of-the-art performance for each device type are discussed. Finally, the major challenges and future opportunities toward the practical application of graphdiyne in high-performance, multifunctional photodetection are presented. This review is intended to serve as a foundational reference to guide subsequent research and development in this rapidly advancing field.
