Assessing compounded environmental risks to wooden built heritage in hot–humid regions using GIS: evidence from Hunan Province, China

Wooden built heritage (WBH) in hot–humid regions is exposed to both sudden natural hazards and long-term environmental degradation. Using Hunan Province, China, as a case study, this research assessed 789 officially designated WBH sites through a GIS-based regional risk framework. Eight indicators—landslides, floods, erosion, fires, precipitation, temperature variability, relative humidity, and potential evapotranspiration—were evaluated. Weights derived from the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Entropy Weight Method were integrated using a distance-function approach, followed by weighted overlay and spatial autocorrelation analysis. High-risk areas were concentrated in the Wuling Mountains, Xuefeng Mountains, and the northern foothills of the Nanling Range. Overall, 40.82% of WBH sites fell within medium- to extremely high-risk categories, while high–high clusters accounted for 36.7% of significant local spatial clusters. The framework reveals pronounced spatial heterogeneity and supports risk-informed prioritization and preventive conservation of WBH in comparable hot–humid regions.
