The Zone Atelier Rhône Basin (ZABR), created in 2001, has its roots in the Rhône Interdisciplinary Environmental Research Programs, (PIREN1 Rhône), which has influenced actors working on hydrosystems through its conceptual advances. Its objective is to provide shared interdisciplinary knowledge on the functioning of the socio-hydrosystem in order to take action in the territories and find sustainable compromises between uses, resources, risks, environmental quality and biodiversity. The ZABR has its roots in the PIREN Rhône. The Rhône River basin covers a very wide hydroclimatic gradient, ranging from alpine systems to large lowland rivers under oceanic and continental influence and Mediterranean watercourses that are tributaries of the Lower Rhône. The chapter also focuses on interdisciplinarity: a conscious approach to understanding the complexity of social ecosystems.
