Insights for Manufacturing, Distribution and Retail Businesses from the IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment experts

These insights draw on the Summary for Policymakers of the IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment, approved in February 2026. IPBES, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, often described as the “IPCC for biodiversity”. It is an independent intergovernmental body with over 150 member governments, that provides scientific assessments on biodiversity and ecosystem services to policy makers. In 2022, IPBES members requested a methodological assessment on the relationship between business and biodiversity. The Assessment was produced by 79 experts from 35 countries, and its findings were approved by all member governments in February 2026. It is intended to inform policy, standards and frameworks that strengthen business transparency and accountability, and the decisions and actions of businesses and financial institutions themselves. These insights were developed independently by experts from the Assessment team to help businesses respond to the findings. They draw directly from the Assessment and are tailored to five types of organisations: primary production businesses; manufacturing, distribution and retail businesses; banks; investors; and insurers. These groups were selected based on their distinct relationships with biodiversity, although they do not cover all business types and there is considerable variation within each category, including by size and purpose. Small and medium-sized enterprises play an important role, particularly when supported through partnerships and collaborative initiatives.
