Modeling climate-smart forestry and wood utilization for climate mitigation potential in Michigan

Forests provide invaluable climate benefits state governments can leverage to protect against future climate impacts. However, the quantity and durability of this climate benefit varies between ecosystems. Further, differences in forest management and wood utilization practices influence the forestry sector’s climate mitigation potential. This report provides critical new information about the potential for forest management and wood utilization in Michigan to support natural climate solutions. This research uses regional carbon modeling to identify climate-smart forestry practices for Michigan, application of which could decrease the state’s projected cumulative forest carbon emissions by over 11% by the end of the century.
