Nurses' knowledge and practices in assessing frailty among older adults in acute care settings: A scoping review

Nurses in acute care settings routinely care for older adults, who represent an increasing proportion of hospitalised patients. They play a pivotal role in identifying, assessing and managing frailty given their high-levels of interaction with patients and family members. However, it is unclear whether nurses understand frailty, utilise validated frailty assessment tools, conduct screening or implement targeted-frailty interventions. Following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual for evidence synthesis and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist, this scoping review aims to evaluate nurses' knowledge and practice in assessing and managing frailty in acute care settings. This review will include all peer-reviewed articles, written in English, and published from 2001 to 2026. The start date was selected to align with the formalisation of the Frailty phenotype by Fried et al in 2001.
