Excited-State Lifetime Measurements in Neutron-Rich Ca, Ar Isotopes

The isotopic mass region at the intersection of Z = 20 and N = 28 magic numbers presents a unique opportunity to constrain both the diverging neutron shell structure approaching 54Ca, the breakdown of the N = 28 shell closure, and the onset of deformation near the 2nd island of inversion around 42Si. This region was investigated in an experiment at INFN-LNL using the segmented AGATA γ-ray spectrometer coupled with the PRISMA recoil mass separator. Utilizing both the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM) and recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) technique and two different targets for the respective parts of the experiment, the lifetimes of states in 50,51,52Ca and 46,47,48Ar were constrained. Here, we present the initial results from this analysis and a forward outlook for the constraint of the lifetimes-of-interest based on the observed population of states and Doppler-shifted peak shapes.
