Development of a vacuum ultraviolet laser system for realizing a thorium-229 nuclear clock

The low-energy isomeric state of thorium-229 (229Th), located at approximately 8.4 eV in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region, can be accessed directly using a VUV laser. Recent demonstrations of laser excitation of the 229Th isomer in solid-state hosts represent a major advancement toward realizing a nuclear clock. In this paper, we present a pulsed VUV laser system based on four-wave mixing, achieving a linewidth on the order of 10 MHz—sufficient to resolve crystal-field splitting. The proposed system enables further investigation of the properties of the 229Th isomer in a solid-state environment.
