Design for a new Mass Separator Beamline at CERN-ISOLDE

Due to the ever-increasing demands for pure radioactive ion beams for nuclear physics experiments at CERN-ISOLDE, a new mass separator beamline is currently under construction. This installation, promising mass separation powers between 104 and 105 for an ion beam throughput in the order of 107 to 105 ions per second, respectively, will consist of a linear radio-frequency quadrupole cooler-buncher ion trap in combination with a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The beamline will have space for two experimental end stations, will feature ultra-high vacuum, aiming for < 10−10mbar at the two experiment handover points, and will have a comprehensive set of beam diagnostics including beam profilers, Faraday cups, and single-ion detectors. The operational principles, design, simulation, and installation status of the machine will be presented in this contribution.
