Will it stand the test of time? Assessing reproducibility in ancient DNA

This project aims to assess the level of reproducibility in studies using ancient DNA. Ancient DNA has gained incredible popularity during the last 10 years, as improvements in wet lab methods has made extracting ancient DNA easier and cheaper. Nonetheless the methods used to analyse this data are very diverse, and often very specific to a lab, or tied to a specific set of tools. Here we want to see how reproducible these studies are. For that we randomly sampled papers published during the last 10 years, with 10 papers for each year. Our study will review how easy it is to reproduce the results, including how easy it is to re-create or download the data, and to run the final analyses. For that we designed a series of criteria to rank papers and will split all the papers selected between the contributors of this registration so each paper is assessed twice. Overall we expect reproducibility to increase over time, we also expect reproducibility levels to depend on journal policies and that overall the level of reproducibility will be low (below the average grade or scale allowed). We also think that the level of reproducibility will vary among the different dimensions analysed here . The scale to rank the paper is provided in this registration and also comes with the expectation we have for each criteria evaluated.
