Hoegwi (Circling Back): A Story of Immigrant Caregiving Across the Pacific

This essay explores caregiving in transnational families as a vital component of immigrant life, especially in the U.S. context. To unpack the ways caregiving both shapes and is shaped by familial understandings of self, personhood, and culture, this essay 1) explores cultural conceptions of caregiving through the narratives of author’s own experience as an immigrant who left their home country about two decades ago, 2) situates those experiences within the shifting culture of caregiving in Korea, and 3) illuminates immigrant life within the context of broader political constraints, such as international policy changes. Using an autoethnographic approach, this essay sheds light on how caregiving is influenced by evolving familial conceptions of identity and cultural expectations from an immigrant perspective, navigating the complexities of a transnational family. In doing so, it also offers insight into immigrant life in the U.S. revealing how political shifts – especially those affecting borders – directly impact family caregiving for elderly members across countries.
