Electric Vehicles Charging Infrastructure Prediction in the West Midlands Combined Authority, UK

Electric vehicles (EVs) are necessary for decarbonisation of transport. However, wider adoption of electric vehicles is dependent on availability of accessible and sufficient charging infrastructure. This study involves exploring the correlation of the EV charging infrastructure with the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) in the West Midlands Combined Authority, UK. Furthermore, P-median facility location optimisation was used to identify locations for 100 new charging facilities. Three alternative weighting schemes were used to represent different policy priorities assigning different weights to population densities, IMD scores and existing charging network. The IMD uses income, employment, education, health, crime, barriers to housing and services, and the living environment. OpenChargeMap dataset showed current total number of EV charging stations as 1563 in the area. This research offers evidence-based recommendations to policymakers, aiming to guide equitable deployment of new EV charging facilities facilitating the transition towards electrified transport.
