An unexpected pleomorph: a case report of a rare back lipoma in a female

Pleomorphic lipomas are rare, benign adipocytic neoplasms most commonly arising in the subcutaneous tissues of the posterior neck, upper back, and shoulders. They show a strong predilection for middle-aged to elderly men; however, occasional cases have been reported in women and in atypical locations. This is the case of a 64-year-old female with a long-standing back mass, found to be a pleomorphic lipoma. Pleomorphic lipomas are rare, benign adipocytic neoplasms, arising from the subcutaneous tissue of the posterior neck, upper back, and shoulders. Recognizing atypical presentations of this condition and understanding its morphological spectrum and immunohistochemical features are critical for accurate and timely diagnosis and to provide optimal patient care.
