Human Dignity and Political Power

Human dignity is often presented as an inherent and universal moral status, yet its practical realization depends on political institutions, social conditions, and the control of power. This chapter examines the relationship between dignity and political systems through a historical, conceptual, and normative analysis. It distinguishes inherent dignity from politically realized dignity and proposes a seven-dimensional framework: equal legal status, bodily integrity, political agency, public justification, material capability, contestability, and protection from humiliation and exclusion.The framework is applied to ancient and premodern status orders, constitutional democracy, socialist and social-democratic traditions, totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and competitive authoritarianism. The chapter argues that dignity becomes politically effective only when power is limited, publicly justified, open to challenge, and supported by participation, oversight, audit, and remedy.
