Thermomechanical and Physical Properties of Sustainable Plaster Composites Reinforced With Waste Paper and Dune Sand

This work addresses the urgent need for sustainable and insulating building materials in Southern Tunisia, where extreme heat conditions are increasing. It investigates plaster reinforced with recycled paper waste (PW) as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fibers for construction applications. Plaster composites were produced with different water-to-plaster (W/P) ratios of 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6, then cured for 28 days before evaluating their physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Results showed that composites containing 0.3% PW and a 0.6 W/P ratio exhibited low density, making them lightweight materials with good physical characteristics. Although flexural and compressive strengths decreased with increasing paper waste and water content. The reduced thermal conductivity highlighted their strong insulating potential. Overall, the study demonstrates that locally sourced paper waste-plaster composites are promising sustainable materials for lightweight and energy-efficient construction, encouraging further optimization for wider eco-friendly building applications.
