Résumé fourni par la source

This chapter reframes the “freeze” response as both protective and a subtle form of protest when facing intense or prolonged oppression. Readers learn to identify the physical cues—like racing heart, numbness, or shaky breath—that signal shutdown. Four exercises—Anchored Sensory Grounding with Systemic Awareness, Unpleasant Event Record as Protest (BEST), Withholding Engagement: Staying Without Responding, and Staying with the No Not Moving, Not Explaining—guide them to track freeze patterns without judgment, seeing how the body “refuses” harsh realities. The practices are supported by lived experience vignettes that illustrate how these practices are enacted in everyday life. By normalizing the freeze response, participants begin to honor the wisdom in freeze and build a compassionate pathway back to active engagement.
