Stalk-eyed fly (Diopsidae) in Baltic Amber scanned by ESRF BM18 synchrotron HIP-CT, NHMD 872634

3D reconstruction of a fossil stalk-eyed fly (Diptera: Diopsidae), employing synchrotron HiP-CT at ESRF BM18. Diopsinae are a charismatic group of Diptera characterized by their prominent eye stalks. They have a fossil record going back to the Paleogene. The most common fossil diopsine taxon is †Prosphyracephala succini (Loew, 1873) [originally proposed in Sphyracephala Say, 1828], which has been reported from Baltic amber, Bitterfeld amber and Rovno amber. The original description is very cursorial, and the type material has never been properly documented and is presumed lost; this makes the identification and classification of other diopsine amber fossils difficult. We redescribe †P. succini from a recently discovered, well preserved specimen from Baltic amber. The specimen was subjected to synchrotron scanning and 3D imaging, allowing for detailed reconstruction of its external features. The specimen is a female. The amber piece is labelled NHMD 872634 at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and contains several arthropod inclusions and the holotype of Ilex wennebergii designated no DK 1073 in the Danish “Danekræ” fossil trove, disallowing destructive methods of investigation.
