Spatial and Temporal Variability of Soil CO2 Efflux in Three Land Use Patterns in and around Behali Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, North East India

Present exploration was conducted during 2023-24 in some key land use systems namely cultivated land agroecosystem (AES), agro-forestry and forest around the Behali wildlife sanctuary, Assam to measure soil CO2 efflux in different seasons. All the sites were different in terms of community characters, composition, productivity, microclimate, age and soil. Soil CO2 efflux rates were having significant variation between the sites i.e. 168.68 (forest) and 276 mg CO2 hr-1 (agro-forestry). Most of the sites showed highest efflux during summer and minimum in winter. Soil respiration also confirmed significant link among diverse soil characters such as soil temperature, organic carbon, soil moisture, potassium, nitrogen etc. The study indicates that change of forest ecosystem to other artificial ecosystem (agro-forestry and Vegetable AES) results in increase of CO2 emission from the soil. Therefore, modification in land-use model will have a long-standing impact on the atmosphere and climate.
