Prevalence and Clinical Features of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Le résumé fourni par la source
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, with a global prevalence ranging from 8-13%. Despite its significant impact on women's health, the epidemiological profile of PCOS in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries remains poorly defined. The GCC countries, comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, have a unique demographic and cultural context that may influence the presentation and diagnosis of PCOS. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to estimate the pooled prevalence of PCOS and summarize its associated clinical features among women in GCC countries through a systematic review and meta-analysis. This research aims to: 1. Determine the pooled prevalence of PCOS in the GCC countries. 2. Identify the clinical features and symptoms associated with PCOS in the GCC population. 3. Examine the diagnostic criteria and screening methods used in the GCC countries. 4. Analyze the healthcare-seeking behavior and treatment outcomes for women with PCOS in the GCC region. Methods: To achieve the study objectives, we will conduct a systematic review of the literature, focusing on studies published in English and Arabic languages. The review will include: 1. A comprehensive search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, using relevant keywords and MeSH terms. 2. Inclusion criteria: studies published between 2000 and 2022, reporting on the prevalence and clinical features of PCOS in the GCC countries. 3. Exclusion criteria: studies not meeting the inclusion criteria, duplicate publications, and studies with incomplete or unclear data. 4. Data extraction: relevant data will be extracted from included studies, including the study population, sample size, diagnostic criteria, and prevalence estimates. 5. Meta-analysis: a random-effects model will be used to estimate the pooled prevalence of PCOS and summarize the clinical features associated with the disorder. Expected Outcomes: The study is expected to yield the following outcomes: 1. An estimated pooled prevalence of PCOS in the GCC countries, providing a more accurate understanding of the disorder's burden in the region. 2. A comprehensive summary of the clinical features and symptoms associated with PCOS in the GCC population, informing healthcare providers and policymakers. 3. An analysis of the diagnostic criteria and screening methods used in the GCC countries, highlighting areas for improvement in PCOS diagnosis and management. 4. Insights into the healthcare-seeking behavior and treatment outcomes for women with PCOS in the GCC region, guiding the development of targeted interventions and support services. Implications: The findings of this study will have significant implications for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of PCOS in the GCC countries. The results will inform healthcare policy and guidelines, contributing to the development of culturally sensitive and effective interventions for women with PCOS in the region.
