Neural Sensitivity to Social Feedback and Peer Context: Implications for Adolescent Mental Health

Heightened neural sensitivity to social feedback is linked to both increased depression and better social adjustment during adolescence. In this project, we investigate whether risk or resilience-promoting effects of neural sensitivity to feedback depend on adolescents’ peer context in a sample of adolescents/early adults (ages 15-22) enrolled in a longitudinal study. We hypothesize that more sensitive individuals 1) experience higher depression when exposed to more peer stress but 2) experience higher wellbeing in contexts of high peer support. In this study, participants complete measures of peer stress and support, depressive symptoms, and social-emotional wellbeing. During a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan, they complete a social feedback task in which they receive negative, positive, and neutral feedback ostensibly generated by peers in response to a personal profile they created. Neural activation to negative and positive (vs. neutral) feedback will be extracted from a priori regions of interest in salience and default mode networks for subsequent analyses. Multiple linear regression analyses will examine the independent and interactive effects of neural sensitivity to social feedback and peer experience on depressive symptoms and wellbeing. Specifically, we will examine whether neural activation to feedback augments both the link between peer stress and depression and the link between peer support and wellbeing concurrently and over time.
