The mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) regions, spanning altitudes between approximately 60 and 200 km, represent a highly dynamic transition zone between the Earth's lower atmosphere and the near-space environment. Historically, atmospheric models and observational interpretations have operated under the assumption of hydrostatic balance, leading to the paradigm that vertical winds in the MLT are negligible (on the order of centimeters per second) when averaged over typical spatial and temporal scales. However, the development of high-resolution ground-based imaging systems, multi-static radar networks, and advanced lidar techniques has shattered this paradigm.Recent observations and high-resolution numerical simulations have demonstrated that vertical winds in the MLT can be highly dynamic, exhibiting velocities of tens of meters per second and sustaining long-lived oscillations. These motions play a vital role in redistributing energy and momentum, driving tracer transport, affecting planetary life transfer, and influencing space weather processes. This Research Topic, titled "Large Long-Lived Vertical Wind Oscillations in the Mesosphere and Thermosphere Regions," compiles eight publications that advance our understanding of these dynamics, from observations of extreme drafts and waves to theoretical coordinate frameworks and numerical models of their atmospheric impacts.
