Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowships in India: Past, Present and Future

Paediatric ophthalmology has undergone remarkable growth in India over the past three decades. What was once a niche discipline centred largely on strabismus has evolved into a comprehensive subspecialty encompassing paediatric cataract, glaucoma, retina, cornea, oculoplasty, refractive disorders, and retinopathy of prematurity. The establishment of dedicated Children’s Eye Centres and structured fellowship programmes has significantly enhanced training opportunities and expanded access to specialised paediatric eye care. This article traces the historical development of paediatric ophthalmology fellowships in India, reviews the current training landscape, and highlights the expanding scope of the specialty. It discusses the evolution of multidisciplinary paediatric eye care teams, changing perceptions regarding career opportunities, and the growing demand for trained paediatric ophthalmologists. The article also outlines future directions in training, research, and clinical practice. As childhood eye care continues to gain prominence, paediatric ophthalmology offers diverse opportunities in clinical practice, academics, and research, making it an increasingly attractive career pathway for young ophthalmologists.
