In the Name of Growth: The Significance of Microsystem and Chronosystem on Sexual Identity Development Among Chinese Gay Men

This study used semi-structured in-depth interviews to analyze the significance of multi-dimensional system of growing environment on sexual identity development among Chinese gay men through the lens of bioecological theory. The influences of original family and peer groups of microsystem as well as personal life course and media influence of chronosystem in shaping the perception of Chinese gay men’s sexual identity were examined. The study also highlighted the widespread occurrence of school bullying rooted in gender stereotypes and stigma related to sexual orientation experienced by gay men. This paper provided a beneficial analytical framework for the sexual identity development and could contribute to understanding the impacts of growing environment system on gay identity.
