Vibroacoustic-based testing is transforming buried pipeline management by enabling non-invasive condition assessment. Advanced vibroacoustic assessment (AVA), powered by Dynamic Response Imaging (DRI), introduces a vibroacoustic signal into pressurized mains via hydrants or valves. These signals excite the pipe at resonance frequencies, revealing localized wall stiffness that can correlate, in metallic pipe, to residual wall thickness profiles over a 5–10-ft resolution span. A case study in Addison, Texas, demonstrates this vibroacoustic process effectiveness on an 8-in. ductile iron pipe installed in 1978. Results showed 85% of pipe sticks retained sufficient strength, with an average remaining thickness of 0.216 in. (80% of original thickness). No active leaks were detected, and some segments exhibited slower deterioration than others. Based on these findings, engineers recommended re-inspection in 5 years, allowing Addison to remove the pipe from its Capital Improvement Project list and reallocate funds. Vibroacoustic assessment enables proactive asset management based on real condition data rather than age.
