Soil amendment evaluation pilots in Colombia: Data from the Clima-LoCa Project

The main objective of the DataBase to evaluate a set of low risk and low cost soil amendments that have potential reduce cadmium availability and uptake by cocoa trees which were identified and discussed with farmers. Methodology:The experiments were established using randomized complete designs (RCD) with repeated measurements over time. Depending on the experimental site, the design included between six farms and four treatments, which were randomly assigned within each farm. Each treatment within each farm constituted an experimental unit composed of 16 trees, of which 9 central trees arranged in two rows and five columns were designated as the sampling unit, while the remaining trees served as border plants. All trees received the corresponding treatment application, but only the 9 central trees were used for data collection and statistical analyses. Baseline soil, leaf, and bean samples were collected prior to treatment application to establish initial conditions. The first treatment application was considered as month 0, and monitoring periods ranged from 9 to 24 months depending on the experimental site. Final sampling campaigns were conducted between May and August 2025. All laboratory analyses were performed by the Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL) at CIAT to characterize soil fertility, evaluate the nutritional status of cacao trees through leaf analysis, and determine Cd concentrations in soil, leaves, and cacao beans.
