Digital Copies of Historical Daily Weather Observations taken at INERA stations across the Democratic Republic of the Congo

This repository hosts digital copies of daily and sub-daily weather records taken at 36 weather stations across the Democratic Republic of the Congo operated by lnstitut National pour l'Etude et la Recherche Agronomiques (INERA). These records include daily measurements of total solar radiation (’Bellani’), extreme temperatures in degree Celsius (’Températures extrêmes’) consisting of daily maximum, minimum and average temperatures, as well as the diurnal temperature range (’Ampl.’), Evaporation in cubic centimeters (’Evaporation’), Rainfall (’Pluies’) in millimeters per day, and Dry- and Wet-bulb Temperatures and Humidity (’Température et Humidité’) recorded at three times of the day, namely 06:00h, 15:00h, and 18:00h local time. This data spans from 1959 up to 2010, with most stations with data between 1960 and the late 1990s. Below are the descriptions of the files in this digital archive: The zipped folders named with station IDs (004-906) contain digital copies of individual station weather records. These digital copies (images) within these subfolders follow a specific naming convention: “STN_YYYYMM_SF” or“STN_YYYYMM_HD”, where STN refers to the three-digit station ID, YYYY is the year, MM is the month, SF represents Standard Format (printed tabular format), and HD indicates a hand-drawn version of the standard format. 01_metadata_INERA_stations.xlsx: Station Metadata including station name, station order, station ID, region, latitude, longitude, and altitude Ancillary documents from Instructions aux Observateurs – Institut National pour l’Etude Agronomique du Congo Belge (INEAC) and Guide pratique à l’usage des observateurs – Réseau Météorologique du Congo Belge describing some of the instruments and observation procedures used, including rain-gauge and thermometer types, and the measurement techniques are available through the Congo Basin Eco-climatological Data Recovery and Valorization (COBECORE) records (http://hdl.handle.net/1854/LU-8587593). These ancillary documents digitised by COBECORE are described on AGATHA, the search environment of the State Archives of Belgium, under item numbers 6050 and 6077.
