Correction: Dynamic soaring decouples dynamic body acceleration and energetics in albatrosses
Le résumé fourni par la source
There were several errors in J. Exp. Biol. (2024) 227, jeb247431 (doi:10.1242/jeb.247431).The units for V̇O2 were incorrectly given as ml min−1 kg−1 throughout; the correct units are ml min−1. This affects parts of Materials and Methods (‘Estimation of V̇O2 from heart rate’, calculation of V̇O2 in Eqns 1 and 2), Results [paragraph 2 of ‘Time budgets and activity-specific energetic costs (objective 1)’] and Discussion (paragraph 6), and Figs 2A, 3A, 4 and 5. The corrected and original versions of the figures are shown below. As a consequence of the change in V̇O2 units, in paragraph 6 of the Discussion, the calculated value for additional energy use should be 7240 J not 7240 J kg−1; the value for the increase in energy intake should then be ∼521 kJ, not ∼1135 kJ, equivalent to an additional 130 g of Atlantic krill, not 284 g. The corrected text is as follows:‘If 1 ml O2 has an energy equivalence of 20.112 J for an albatross (Bevan et al., 1995), then over the course of an hour, birds soaring in large arcs (90 deg) will use an additional ∼7240 J. Thus, over a typical 3 day trip involving 53% of time spent dynamic soaring, that would amount to an increase in energy intake of ∼521 kJ. That would be equivalent to an additional 130 g of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, one of the most common items in the diet of both black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses (Mills et al., 2020), with a calorific content of 4 kJ g−1 wet mass (Clarke and Prince, 1980).Additionally, in the description of V̇O2 calculation above Eqn 2 (Materials and Methods), the terms ‘mass-independent’ and ‘mass-specific’ V̇O2 were inadvertently swapped. The text should read:‘Mass-specific V̇O2 estimates were then multiplied by the mass of each bird (kg) to provide mass-independent V̇O2 in ml min−1.’Both the online full text and PDF versions of the paper have been corrected. The authors apologise to the readers for these errors, which do not impact the conclusions of the paper.
