White Noise and Postural Control in Healthy Adults: Differential Effects in Virtual and Non-Virtual Environments

This study evaluated the effect of sound on postural control in a single group of healthy young adults in two protocols: Non-VR and VR. Participants stood with their feet together on an Airex pad (AIREX, Sins, Switzerland) placed on a force platform (AMTI, MA, USA) and were instructed to keep their balance as steady as possible in two protocols. The Non-VR protocol had 4 conditions: 1) Eyes Open and Stationary Sound; 2) Eyes Open and No Sound; 3) Eyes Closed and Stationary Sound; and 4) Eyes Closed and No Sound. In the VR protocol, participants wore an HTC Vive Pro II headset (HTC Corporation, Taoyuan City, Taiwan) and cable-connected Bose QuietComfort® 35 II around-ear headphones (Bose Corporation, Framingham, MA). This protocol had 4 conditions: Static VR and Stationary Sound; 2) Static VR and No Sound; 3) Dynamic VR and Stationary Sound; and 4) Dynamic VR and No Sound. There are two datasets (one for each protocol) and each contains postural sway per the different conditions.
