On 15th–16th May 2026, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced an outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola virus (BDBV). Mounting an effective laboratory response in the region is difficult because of several factors: the remote epicentre in Eastern DRC’s Ituri and North/South Kivu provinces and adjacent Ugandan border areas; insecurity caused by conflict and political instability; limited laboratory capacity for safe BDBV diagnosis; transport challenges for diagnostic kits; and the lack of clinically validated BDBV diagnostics, approved vaccines, or causal therapeutic strategies.
