Socio-Economic Resilience and Innovative Adaptation Strategies of Informal Transport Workers: A Multidisciplinary Study in the PCMC Area
Résumé fourni par la source
Abstract The rise of app-based aggregators has disrupted traditional urban mobility, creating acute challenges for informal transport workers in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). This study examines the socio-economic resilience of auto-rickshaw drivers through a multidisciplinary lens—urban economics, commerce, and social science. Using surveys and interviews, findings reveal a growing “debt trap,” with debt incidence rising from 30% to 55%. While digital disruption has marginalized many drivers, resilience persists through collective bargaining, income diversification, and community support. Yet structural barriers—limited institutional recognition, restricted finance, and gendered exclusion— constrain adaptive capacity. The paper proposes an outcome-based framework aligned with NEP 2020 and SDGs 8 & 10, recommending debt restructuring, digital literacy, and formal integration of auto-rickshaws into multimodal transport planning.
