Revisiting Learning Theories in the Context of Digital Natives
Résumé fourni par la source
Abstract Purpose The chapter explains digital natives and their shifting preferences for using digital technologies as a means of learning. It discusses the deep-rooted theories of learning and how these theories have evolved to meet modern learning requirements of today. Need for the Study In an era where smart phones, social media and the Internet have become mainstream life necessities, learning institutions are grappling with the necessity to shift ancient pedagogical models toward behaviors and contributions determined by these students. The chapter fulfills a significant gap in the review of literature and perspectives of digital natives on learning preferences. Methodology The chapter employs state-of-the-art literature review and maps out the inclusion of certain well-established learning theories over a period of time. It also lays out perspectives of leaners about their leaning preferences. Findings The study offers useful insights regarding the online learning behavior of the modern learner. Despite its widespread use, particularly in corporate learning, the user experience is at best uneven. The findings indicate that the use of digital learning communities remains minimal, which means that the integration of collaborative and networked learning is still far off from becoming part of practices. Practical Implications The chapter provides some interesting insights for facilitators and trainers who are working with the new age learners. It also highlights the challenges that digital natives pose for learning and engagement to administrators and policy makers.
