A Translation Mining Approach to Grammatical Aspect: Insights from Slavic and Baltic Languages

This study investigates grammatical aspect in Baltic and Slavic languages using the Translation Mining methodology. Building on Dickey’s typology, which classifies Slavic languages into Eastern and Western aspectual groups, we employ quantitative corpus data to assess the distribution of perfective and imperfective aspects and explore how aspectual choices align with or diverge from Dickey’s model. The findings of the reported statistical analysis partially confirm the East-West division, but they also reveal transitional languages, particularly in the South Slavic and Baltic groups, suggesting a more nuanced continuum of aspectual variation. Finally, we identify a correlation between aspect usage and auxiliary drop in perfect constructions, indicating potential diachronic interactions between aspect and tense. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of Translation Mining in cross-linguistic semantics and offers new insights into the micro-typology of aspect in Baltic and Slavic languages.
