Current state of vegetable production in the Irkutsk region

This article examines the basic concepts of food security. The study aimed to analyze vegetable production data and develop a set of measures to improve the competitiveness of vegetable products in the Irkutsk Region. The methodological framework utilized the works of domestic and international researchers, as well as statistical data from the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat). The study utilized statistical, computational, balance, and monographic methods. It demonstrates the region’s vegetable supply and identifies ways to improve it. An analysis of statistical data on vegetable production in the Irkutsk Region revealed that in 2024, compared to 2015, the gross vegetable harvest in the Irkutsk Region decreased by 12.9%, reaching 93,200 tons. The population of the Irkutsk Region decreased by 3.5% to 2,322,300. Vegetable production decreased by 9.5% to 40.1 kg per year. Vegetable consumption decreased from 71 to 67 kg per year, or by 5.6%. Vegetables are imported into the Irkutsk Region from other regions and from abroad. In 2024, 26.9 kg of vegetables were imported per capita, accounting for 40.1% of average per capita consumption. Based on calculations, the Irkutsk Region’s self-sufficiency in vegetables is 28.6%, which is 61.4% less than the minimum specified in the Russian Federation’s Food Security Doctrine. To increase the competitiveness of vegetable products and ensure self-sufficiency in vegetables in the Irkutsk region, it is necessary to improve government support measures, implement the latest information technologies in production processes, modernize vegetable storage facilities, etc.
