Female Violent Nonstate Actors in Boko Haram Organisation in North-East Nigeria 2009-2019

Females were pivotal to the Boko Haram organisation's tactics in NorthEast Nigeria between 2009 and 2019, although their roles were principally considered to be passive and the result of coercion. Yet, there were female violent non-state actors within the organisation who executed agency. However, scholarly works failed to investigate the militarised nature of these females due to gender stereotypes that designated violent extremism as a male's domain. To fill this lacuna, this paper employed the history method of qualitative data collection and analysis. Primary data gathered through oral interviews with repentant Boko Haram male and female combatants, aid workers, Nigeria military personnel and government officials that served on the theatres of the conflict, and secondary data from related literature, were interrogated to highlight the understudied categories of female perpetrators and conspirators within the sect who executed acts of terrorism. It submitted that there were militarised females who conspired and perpetrated extreme violence in the Boko Haram terrorist organisation. It concluded that understanding the extent of their participation will eliminate spaces of invincibility, and make counterterrorism programs more effective.
