The evolution of regional technologies is typically path dependent, as new activities build upon related knowledge bases that restrict the extent of breakthrough diversification. However, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) may alter these constraints. This study examines how such general-purpose technology (GPT) reshapes these evolutionary constraints. We develop the concept of AI-technology coupling coordination (AI-CCD) to capture the structural embedding and proportional coordination between AI development and regional technological portfolios. Using patent data from China, we analyse how AI integration mitigates path dependence and fosters path-breaking renewal in regional technological evolution. The results show that stronger AI-technology coordination reduces technological lock-in and promotes path-breaking development, revealing that AI can help regions escape entrenched trajectories. These findings provide new insights into how transversal technologies reconfigure regional technological trajectories and advance our understanding of path-dependent and path-breaking dynamics in technological evolution.
