Collaborative Innovation and Performance of Family Firms: A Meta-Analysis

Despite extensive research on family firms engaging in collaborative innovation, its performance consequences remain debated. This meta-analysis integrates insights from open innovation and family firm governance research to explain how family involvement and collaboration partner types shape the relationship between collaborative innovation and firm performance. Synthesizing 64 quantitative studies on 128,981 family firms across 17 countries between 1990 and 2020, our findings confirm a positive association between collaborative innovation and firm performance. This relationship is significantly stronger for innovation-related outcomes than for financial performance. Furthermore, family ownership strengthens the relationship, highlighting the role of long-term orientation and aligned incentives in appropriating value from external R&D collaborations. When we look at collaboration types, partnerships with business-group-affiliated partners significantly weaken performance effects. Overall, our meta-analytic results advance our understanding of innovation in family firms by revealing how governance structures and partner selection constitute critical boundary conditions for realizing the benefits of collaborative innovation in family firms.
