Effectiveness of Nutritional Interventions in Enhancing Tocopherol and Polyphenol Intake among Dyslipidaemic Subjects

Dyslipidaemia is a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor that may be associated with inadequate intake of antioxidant-rich nutrients, including tocopherols and polyphenols. This study evaluated the effect of different nutritional intervention strategies on tocopherol and polyphenol intake among dyslipidaemic subjects. A total of 240 participants aged 25–50 years with dyslipidaemia were selected through purposive sampling and equally allocated to four intervention groups: Dietary Counselling Group (DCG), Mixture Supplementation Group (MSG), Nutrition Education Group (NEG), and Dietary Counselling and Mixture Supplementation Group (DCMSG). Each group included experimental and control subgroups of 30 participants. The intervention continued for 180 days, and dietary intake was assessed at baseline, mid-intervention, and post-intervention using the 24-hour dietary recall method. Data were analysed using paired t-tests, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s HSD post hoc test. The experimental subgroups showed improvements in antioxidant intake after intervention. Polyphenol intake increased most in DCMSG (434.28%), followed by MSG (380.48%) and DCG (113.04%), whereas NEG showed a limited increase (5.26%). Tocopherol intake also improved, with the highest increase in DCMSG (164.77%), followed by MSG (93.38%) and DCG (92.32%), while NEG showed a marginal increase (1.99%). Control subgroups showed minimal improvement or declining trends. ANOVA indicated significant differences among intervention groups for post-intervention polyphenol intake (F = 4.055, p = 0.0088), while post-intervention tocopherol intake did not differ significantly among groups (F = 1.857, p = 0.268). The findings indicate that structured nutritional interventions, particularly combined dietary counselling and mixture supplementation, improved tocopherol and polyphenol intake among dyslipidaemic subjects in this sample.
