Early Eruption Patterns and Tooth-Specific Oral Health Status Among 6-Year-Old Children in Laos

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate tooth-specific eruption patterns and oral health status of permanent teeth among 6-year-old children in Laos and to provide evidence for prevention-oriented oral health programs.Methods: A secondary analysis was conducted using oral health survey data collected from 513 children aged 6 years in five provinces of Laos between 2018 and 2019.Permanent teeth were analyzed at the tooth-specific level.Eruption rates were calculated for each tooth type, and oral health status was assessed using a surface-based scoring system ranging from 0 to 10. Regional and urban-rural differences were statistically analyzed.Results: Mandibular first molars showed the highest eruption rate (64.3%), followed by mandibular central incisors (50.5%) and maxillary first molars (49.5%).Most permanent canines, premolars, and second molars remained unerupted.Oral health status scores were generally high across erupted permanent teeth; however, first permanent molars demonstrated the lowest scores among all evaluated teeth.Mean scores of maxillary and mandibular first molars were 9.96±0.24and 9.91±0.39,respectively.Significant regional differences were observed in first molar oral health status, and mandibular first molars in urban areas showed significantly lower scores than those in rural areas (p＜0.05).Conclusion: Permanent first molars were the earliest erupted and most vulnerable permanent teeth among 6-year-old Lao children.Preventive measures should be implemented immediately after eruption, and tooth-specific data may support the development of effective oral health policies and preventive programs in Laos.
